The International Headache Congress is held every second year, organized and hosted on behalf of IHS by a member national society. Bids to hold the event are judged in competition by Council, four years before it takes place.

The International Headache Society (IHS) is a charity organisation founded in 1981 for people from all professions that are working to treat headache disorders.

A group of headache specialists from around the world, instituted a classification system for headache disorders which has become standard for headache diagnosis and clinical research.

In preparation of the chronic headache medical care guideline, the disease classification and the diagnostic criteria are needed. The common headache classification and diagnostic criteria become necessary to develop the patient registration, gene analysis, research of the disease-based pharmacometrics which will really start in next fiscal year.
In 1988, the International Headache Society (IHS), a group of headache specialists from around the world, instituted a classification system for headache disorders which has become standard for headache diagnosis and clinical research. The classification criteria were updated in 2003.
It divides headaches into two broad categories:
* primary headache disorders which include migraine, tension-type headache, and cluster headache
* secondary headache disorders which are due to another organic disorder
